Even better than the second edition, which was already very good, this guide shines the spotlight on the part of Florida which is "un-Florida." This is not the Florida of Orlando theme parks, Miami art-deco, or Key West dive bars and conch houses. Nope. This Florida is firmly planted in the South, and is as Southern as pecan pie. That's a far cry from Miami's mix or northeastern migrants and Latino immigrants. It's a vastly different experience.This book covers the region of Florida from Jacksonville to Pensacola, and as far south as Gainesville. There's an enormous amount of fascinating sites and activities to do in this region. There's culture and history, beautiful beaches, a gently rolling green landscape further inland, food, art, literature, and ecotourism galore. All this goodness is absolutely family friendly and easily accessible from I-10 and I-75. Steer clear of I-95 to avoid the crowds who are simply blasting through on their way to points further south.Now, the book. This is an absolutely exhaustive encyclopedia of this region. The authors' enthusiasm for this area just jumps off the pages. The narrative is fresh and engaging, and the organization of the book is natural and intuitive. The listings include all of the best lodgings and dining in the respective areas covered, and the information on the listings is right up to date (as of 2018). You're not going to be led astray to closed restaurants and by-gone resorts. It's all fresh and complete. There's something for everyone here, too. I love historic architecture, and this part of the country is not normally a place people associate with it. Did you know that there are 100 antebellum plantations in and around Tallahassee? I discovered Fernandina Beach with this book. And lovely Pensacola is a beautiful, historic destination in its own right.Anyway, suffice to say that I really like this guide, and being a resident of Houston, many of these places are within an extended road trip from my home. Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Birmingham... check out this book to see what wonders are hiding in your backyard.
